Folk Art

Traditional folkart figures. Handmade cultural artefacts of a curious nature.

Window
Watchers

Window watchers were placed in windows to protect the home from evil spirits.

This example has an astonished face typical of these figures.

Shadow Boxes

Also known as Visitation, or Manifestation Boxes, were used in sympathetic magic.

Small tokens were placed inside relating to the wishes of the user.

Bogle-clocks

Pocket talismans common in the past, but not frequently seen now.

These are examples collected in the Forest of Dean, date unknown.

Hob
Houses

Once a common sight in rural cottages, usually found on the mantle pieces.

They were believed to be the homes of household fairies and hearth spirits.
